United States (IBwire.com - December 23, 2010) The Republic of the Maldives celebrates National Day on the first day of the third Islamic month of Rabee-ul-Awwal. The festivities mark the occasion when leader, Muhammad Thakurufaanu Al-Azam revolted against Portuguese rulers and eradicated them from the country in 1573.

The people of the Maldives were so happy to gain independence after 15 years of colonisation by the Portuguese that they celebrate the victory of Mohamed Thakurufaanu each year on the first day of Rabee-ul-Awwal, which they call National Day.

The people of the Maldives have a strong sense of patriotism and as with all festivals, during National Day the streets will be decorated with green and red National flags. Natives from all walks of life will celebrate together and the celebrations will bring about a sense of unity in the people.

Celebrations will also take place on all of the other islands as families come together to enjoy food and traditional music.
