Al-Anon Helps Families Deal with Drinking During the Holidays

Virginia Beach, United States (IBwire.com - November 08, 2012)

The holiday season can be a difficult time for friends and families of problem drinkers. A combination of high expectations and embarrassing situations often lead to disappointments and hurt feelings. Family events during the holidays are especially vulnerable to drinking-related conflict.

In a new podcast from Al Anon Family Groups, anonymous family members discuss how they deal with drinking problems during the holidays. The podcast, “Al-Anon helps deal with holiday drinking problems,” appears under “First Steps to Al-Anon Recovery” at http://www.al-anon.alateen.org. The purpose of the podcast is to let listeners know there is help and hope in Al-Anon Family Groups for families and friends of problem drinkers.

Marianne, Leanna, and Marietta are Al-Anon members on the podcast who offer their experience with awkward situations during the holiday season. Speaking anonymously to protect the anonymity of alcoholic family members in recovery, they share suggestions that have contributed calmness and joy to their homes at this special time of the year.

Anonymity is an important principle of the Al-Anon program. Members in Al-Anon share their experience, strength, and hope with each other as equals—regardless of social, educational, or financial position.

Al-Anon Family Groups are for families and friends who have been affected by a loved one’s drinking. Nearly 16,000 local groups meet throughout the U.S., Canada, Bermuda, and Puerto Rico every week. Al-Anon Family Groups meet in more than 130 countries, and Al-Anon literature is available in more than 40 languages. Al-Anon Family Groups have been offering strength and support to families and friends of problem drinkers since 1951.
