While there have been quite a few attempts at "going local" with the social networking craze, TownSync believes they have caught onto something different - combining the best aspects of top social networking websites into a site for towns of any size. Users on TownSync can find people in town and add them as friends, post classified ads, enter into discussions, create groups and send messages - all common features on social websites these days. While there are many similarities to other social networks there are also some stellar differences.
At it's core, TownSync is a town calendar offering a way for people to see the most recent and upcoming events happening in their local town. Each town has a community page that gathers information from all of the users associated with that town and each profile, whether it be a personal profile or business page. When events are created on a users calendar they have the option to display it to the community, just their friends, or to keep it private. When a user or business views an event on the community page, they can click the "sync" button that will sync the event with their own TownSync calendar - thus the name TownSync.
The site is structured in such a way that people and businesses of a TownSync Community are shown and displayed in very much the same way. Businesses can create profiles ('pages') and can add people as friends much like an individual can. They can also post classifieds, create events, and enter into discussions with the same process as an individual profile. The ease of making connections may be appealing to small businesses as it offers a way to connect with clients and customers from their local area rather than people outside of town.
An additional benefit small businesses may enjoy is the banner advertising system. Included on TownSync is a banner creation process that allows anyone to create their own custom advertisement in their town. A $10 ad circulates the site, but only in the community (zip-code) selected. This platform offers businesses of small towns an easy way to advertise online and to promote themselves locally for less.
With their Social-Calendar, TownSync is attempting to change the way people think about the local internet. While many new sites are struggling to aggregate local news, blogs and information, TownSync has taken a different path by giving local areas a way to strengthen and build their community with those around them.
