Dartford: Kent town, Dartford has produced a record number of new companies during the first half of 2012. 447 companies were set up, beating any other half year on record for the area and smashing the previous year’s figure of 408 for the same period.

The location of Dartford is excellent for start-ups and growing businesses, with easy access to Europe through the Eurostar and outstanding links to London by road and rail. However, some of Dartford's most prominent industries suffered in the 20th century, causing redundancies and unemployment. Brewing, paper-making, flour milling and the manufacture of cement all either closed down completely or experienced rapid decline.

The decline of such important local industries led to the decline of the town centre, with a high number of low cost shops taking over empty premises. However, with a £94 million regeneration of the town centre in the pipeline, brighter times lie ahead for Dartford. A new community stadium and an award-winning riverside development at Ingress Park have already been developed to great success.
